A Powerhouse in Auto Parts
PUSHED BY AUTO MAKERS TO
SUPPLY LARGER AND LARGER SECTIONS OF CARS, auto suppliers are succumbing to the urge to
merge. In the latest deal, Lear is buying United Technologies' automotive unit for $2.3
billion. The move adds UT's $3 billion electrical instrument panel components and
interior-trim business to Lear's $9.1 billion seatmaking operations, enabling the
Southfield (Mich.) company to build most of a vehicle's interior. And with automobile
makers insisting that parts suppliers keep pace with their global expansion, the deal
expands Lear's European presence.
